Home sweet home

The first of 24 regular season games at Rod Brind'Amour arena gets going at 7:30 tomorrow, and it's more than just a big night for this year's Storm team.

The players that made up the Panago Peewee 'A' Tyees hockey team last year, coached by Paul Stapley will be honored by the Storm organization for winning the Provincial championship. Their banner will be raised to the rafters sometime during the night.

They went unbeaten in 47 games during the regular season and tournament play, knocked off Juan de Fuca to clinch the Island championship, then beat Cranbrook 8-3 in the gold medal game.
They also became the first Campbell River team to win a BC title since Rod Brind'Amour and the Bantam Tyees did it 25 years ago.
If you get a chance, come out and recognize these remarkable young men for their accomplishment.

In VIJHL news, The Victoria Cougars and Peninsula Panthers kicked off their season at the Arch in Esquimalt, but it was the visiting Panthers who treated it like their home opener. They won 5-0, with 28 saves from Brady Berisoff, who was the games first star, giving Jackson Penny his first win behind the bench. Blueliner Tyler Porteous, who played last year with the AJHL's St.Albert Steel, picked up a goal and had 2 assists. Mike Scarborough had 2 assists and was named third star. Five different goals scorers for the Panthers, who got one from newly-acquired Corey Allen, a former Storm player just released by the Glacier Kings.
Cougars coach Mark Van Helvoirt told voice of the Cougars Matt Williams that goaltending was not an issue, despite Zack Wear allowing 5 goals.

The Storm have a home and home with those Panthers beginning next friday at the Panorama Arena.
